The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa commemorated the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with a reception attended by government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, military representatives, business leaders and friends of China.
Delivering the keynote address, Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, reflected on the historic role of the People’s Liberation Army in safeguarding China’s sovereignty, promoting national development and contributing to global peace. He described the PLA as a modern and professional force committed to maintaining regional and international stability while supporting China’s vision of peaceful development.
Ambassador Wu noted that over the past 99 years, the People’s Liberation Army has undergone remarkable transformation, evolving into one of the world’s most advanced defence forces. He said the PLA continues to uphold its mission of protecting China’s national security while actively participating in international peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has always remained committed to safeguarding peace and contributing to a community with a shared future for mankind,” Ambassador Wu said. He added that China remains dedicated to pursuing peaceful development and fostering cooperation with countries around the world through dialogue, mutual respect and shared prosperity.
The Ambassador also highlighted the strong and growing partnership between China and South Africa, describing defence cooperation as one of the many pillars supporting the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. He said military exchanges and cooperation continue to strengthen mutual trust and understanding while contributing to peace and stability on the African continent.
Wu reaffirmed China’s support for multilateralism and called on the international community to work together in addressing common global challenges, including conflict, climate change, food security and sustainable development. He emphasised that peace remains the foundation for economic growth and human progress.
Guests at the reception praised the longstanding friendship between China and South Africa, noting the expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure development, education, science and technology. Several speakers acknowledged China’s significant contribution to South Africa’s development through investment in renewable energy, industrialisation and skills development.
The reception also celebrated the enduring friendship between the Chinese and South African people, with cultural performances showcasing China’s rich heritage and promoting greater people-to-people exchanges. The event provided an opportunity for guests to strengthen diplomatic ties and reaffirm their commitment to deeper cooperation.
As China prepares to mark the centenary of the People’s Liberation Army next year, Ambassador Wu expressed confidence that the armed forces would continue to modernise while remaining committed to safeguarding peace and supporting international cooperation.
The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between China and South Africa, with guests expressing optimism that the partnership will continue to deliver tangible benefits for both countries. The anniversary served not only as a celebration of the PLA’s achievements over nearly a century but also as a reminder of the importance of peace, dialogue and international cooperation in building a more secure and prosperous future.
