HONOR South Africa joined hundreds of volunteers this Mandela Day in transforming Thathani Primary School in Zola, Soweto, reaffirming the technology brand’s commitment to empowering communities through education, innovation and meaningful partnerships.
Partnering with the Adopt-a-School Foundation and a coalition of leading South African businesses, HONOR will contribute to the Foundation’s annual “Back to School for Mandela Day” campaign, an initiative designed to create safer, more inspiring and future-ready learning environments for young South Africans.
The day saw volunteers revitalise classrooms, improve learner facilities, establish a vegetable garden, support literacy programmes and introduce learners to coding and robotics activities, leaving a lasting legacy that extends well beyond Mandela Day.
For HONOR South Africa, the initiative reflects the company’s belief that access to technology and quality education are essential to unlocking opportunity.
“At HONOR, we believe technology should empower people and create opportunities that improve lives,” said Fred Zhou, Chief Executive Officer of HONOR South Africa.
“Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful impact is created through collective action. At HONOR, we believe technology should be a bridge to opportunity, especially for young people who deserve every chance to reach their full potential.”
“Our commitment to digital inclusion extends far beyond a single day of service. Across South Africa, we have invested in initiatives that bring technology closer to communities, from establishing Cyber Labs in underserved schools and supporting coding and robotics education, to empowering young women through our Girls in ICT programme and creating meaningful work opportunities through the YES initiative.”
Mandela Day represents more than 67 minutes of service. It is a reminder that sustainable impact is achieved when government, business, civil society and communities work together to address the country’s most pressing challenges.
Steven Lebere, Chief Executive Officer of the Adopt-a-School Foundation, mentioned that “Mandela Day reminds us that lasting change begins with ordinary people choosing to make an extraordinary difference. By investing our time, skills and resources into schools, we are investing in the future of every learner who walks through those gates. Together with our partners, we are creating conducive learning environments where children feel valued, inspired and empowered to succeed.”
Throughout the day, volunteers are painting classrooms and the Grade R facility, enhance play areas, support learner wellbeing initiatives, facilitate robotics and coding activities, stock the school library with donated books and participate in literacy programmes that encourage a lifelong love of reading.
By partnering with organizations that share a common vision for education and community development, HONOR South Africa continues to demonstrate that innovation is not only about technology but also about creating opportunities that help people thrive.
As South Africans commemorate Nelson Mandela’s legacy, HONOR remains committed to using innovation, collaboration and technology to build stronger communities and help shape a brighter future for the country’s youth.
