Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng has highlighted China’s development experience and growing economic cooperation with South Africa during the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum, held on 31 October 2026.

The ambassador attended the forum at the invitation of former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, joining more than 400 representatives from government, political parties, business, academia, media, think tanks and local communities.

In his address, Wu focused on the theme of “Experience of Local Economic Development in the Global South”, sharing perspectives on China’s development journey and its approach to economic modernisation.

He highlighted China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and the country’s modernisation experience, offering insights into how development strategies can contribute to economic growth and improved livelihoods.

The ambassador also emphasised the positive developments in trade and investment between China and South Africa, pointing to the growing opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

Wu said the strategic guidance provided by the leaders of both countries, combined with the efforts of governments, businesses and communities, would help strengthen practical cooperation and deliver further benefits to their people.

His participation at the forum underscored the importance of exchanging development experiences among countries of the Global South, particularly as nations seek innovative approaches to economic growth, investment and sustainable development.

China and South Africa have continued to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership, with trade, investment, infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture among the important areas of cooperation.

The ambassador’s remarks come at a time when both countries are seeking to expand economic opportunities and deepen collaboration in ways that support inclusive development.

The Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum provides a platform for leaders, policymakers, business representatives and academics to engage in discussions on economic development, governance and social transformation.

Established by Motlanthe in 2014, the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation seeks to contribute to South Africa’s development through initiatives that promote dialogue, education and social cohesion.

The forum has become one of the foundation’s flagship gatherings, bringing together influential voices from different sectors to exchange ideas and explore solutions to economic and social challenges.

Wu’s attendance further highlighted the importance of strengthening dialogue between South Africa and China beyond formal diplomatic engagements, creating opportunities for cooperation through business, education, policy discussions and community development.

As both countries continue to explore new avenues for economic partnership, the exchange of experiences at platforms such as the Drakensberg forum could contribute to identifying practical approaches to inclusive growth and development.

The gathering also reinforced the importance of cooperation among Global South countries in addressing shared development challenges and building stronger economic partnerships for the future.
