The compact SUV segment is one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested battlegrounds, with buyers
spoiled for choice by established Japanese, Korean and increasingly impressive Chinese brands. Into
this crowded market steps the 2026 Changan UNI-S, a striking newcomer that combines futuristic styling,
generous equipment levels and competitive pricing.
The first thing that grabs your attention is the design. The UNI-S looks unlike anything else in its price
bracket. Its frameless front grille, sharp LED lighting and coupe-inspired profile give it a premium
appearance that would not look out of place among considerably more expensive European SUVs. It has
genuine road presence and stands apart from the more conservative styling of rivals such as the Toyota
Corolla Cross and Kia Seltos.
Interior
Inside, the UNI-S continues to impress. The cabin has a modern, driver-focused layout with quality
materials and a high-tech atmosphere. A large infotainment screen and digital instrument display
dominate the dashboard, while soft-touch surfaces and faux leather finishes add to the upmarket feel.
Rear passenger space is particularly impressive, with excellent legroom making the vehicle suitable for
family duties.
There are, however, a few irritations. Like many modern vehicles, most functions are controlled through
the touchscreen, including climate settings. This can be distracting while driving and takes time to get
used to. The infotainment system itself is responsive but its menu structure can feel unnecessarily
complicated.
Engine & Performance
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing an impressive 138kW
and 300Nm, making the UNI-S one of the most powerful vehicles in its segment. The engine is paired
with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that delivers brisk acceleration and effortless
highway cruising. Around town, however, the gearbox can occasionally hesitate in stop-start traffic.
Ride quality is another strong point. The suspension is tuned for comfort and copes well with South
Africa’s often challenging road conditions. The UNI-S remains composed over broken surfaces and offers
low noise levels at highway speeds, making it a capable long-distance cruiser.
Technology & Safety
Higher-specification models come with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems,

including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and blind-
spot monitoring. Such features are usually found in considerably more expensive vehicles.

Verdict
The biggest hurdle for Changan remains brand recognition and long-term confidence in dealer support
and resale values. Yet judged purely on its merits, the 2026 UNI-S is a compelling package. Stylish,
spacious, powerful and packed with technology, it is one of the most intriguing new SUVs to arrive in
South Africa this year and deserves serious consideration from buyers willing to look beyond traditional
badges.
