Makro shoppers across three provinces came together to knit 393 scarves for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, creating nearly 590 metres of warmth for people in need.
The initiative took place on 11 July 2026 at Makro Amanzimtoti, Makro Montague Gardens and Makro Carnival, where customers were invited to add their stitches to scarves being knitted in-store.
“Every scarf carries the time, care and generosity of the people who helped make it,” says Carolyn Steyn, co-founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. “We are deeply grateful to Makro and its customers for turning the spirit of Mandela Day into something practical that will bring warmth and dignity to people in need.”
The 393 completed scarves, measuring approximately 589.5 metres collectively, were handed over to 67 Blankets at Makro Riversands on 21 July 2026.
Langa Khanyile, Retail Marketing Executive at Makro, says the initiative gave customers a simple but meaningful way to make a difference.
“Mandela Day reminds us that collective action, no matter how small, can have a meaningful impact. Our customers embraced the opportunity to contribute, and together they produced 393 scarves that will provide warmth well beyond the stores where they were knitted.”
