The Suzuki Swift has become one of South Africa’s most recognisable small cars, and the latest generation strengthens the formula that has made it such a popular choice: compact dimensions, low running costs, practical packaging and a price that remains within reach of many first-time buyers.

For 2026, the Swift range starts at R228,900, putting the entry-level hatchback firmly in the value-for-money sector.

Under the bonnet is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 60kW and 112Nm. Those figures will not excite performance enthusiasts, but the Swift is not intended to be a hot hatch. Its strength lies in being an economical and easy-to-drive urban car. Suzuki claims fuel consumption from just 4.4 litres/100km, which makes the Swift particularly attractive to commuters facing South Africa’s high cost of motoring.

The five-speed manual remains available, while buyers wanting the convenience of an automatic can choose the CVT on GL+ and GLX derivatives. The CVT is likely to appeal to urban motorists who spend considerable time in stop-start traffic, although those who enjoy a more involved driving experience will probably prefer the manual.

Despite its small footprint, the Swift makes good use of its interior space. It is 3.86m long, with a 265-litre boot, making it easy to manoeuvre in crowded shopping centres and city streets without sacrificing useful luggage capacity. Its 145mm ground clearance is also adequate for everyday South African roads.

Equipment varies considerably across the range. The entry-level GL is deliberately basic, but the GL+ adds a seven-inch touchscreen and 15-inch alloy wheels. Move to the GLX and the package becomes substantially more sophisticated, with a nine-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, LED projector headlamps and a colour LCD information display.

Safety is another strong point. All versions come with six airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, while the Swift is built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform. Higher derivatives add features such as a reverse camera and additional convenience equipment.

The Swift’s biggest advantage, however, may be its ownership proposition. Suzuki has a large presence in South Africa, which gives buyers confidence about dealer support, parts availability and servicing.

VERDICT

The Swift remains one of the smartest choices for buyers seeking affordable new-car motoring. It is economical, easy to drive, sufficiently spacious and backed by a strong warranty. The GL+ is arguably the sweet spot, while the GLX CVT makes sense for buyers wanting a more comprehensive specification without breaking through the R300,000 barrier.
