Ever Month Stokvel talk travel across the country t met different social clubs, stokvels or Medigodisano.
This Month the media team was in Pankop , Mpumalanga to meet one of the oldest stokvel group in
that province Clap and sing Stokvel.
The organization which was established back in 1975 with few members and it was using the name
Bomme Ba Motse Buria Society.
One of the oldest member Esther Mahangu said,: “ I am the only co-founders of the organization who is
still alive, majority are no longer with us hence graduating younger ones are beginning to take charge.
And I am here to guide the new ones to make sure we remain relevant many decades later, for instance
we do not allow our members to drink alcohol during funerals of our members and event after the
funeral , no one is allowed to do that not unless far away at her/ his b own home .
We want to keep it old ways continue to respect and conduct funerals according to our culture, but we
have also decided to change the name Sing and Clap Stokvel few years ago to accommodated other
things like birthdays and wedding which were not there when we started
Our organization was initials our organization was about burials and tombstone unveiling when we
started back then, “Mahlangu concluded.
Lerato Mmutle one of the youngest member of the organization said,: “ it is understandable why we
have to keep it as it was when they started, we have a culture to protect as the now generation,
therefore dancing at the funeral to me it doesn’t make sense.
I do not understand why people drink after funerals, they say it is after tears but the dance at such
events, so I don’t want that to happen at my own funeral.
Therefore every Month I make sure I contribute my R250, 00 to our savings account so that I remain a
loyal member and help build the stokvel for the next generation to continue doing the same,” she
mentioned.
