Over 130 tonnes of food – or enough for 520,000 meals – were donated by South Africans in a massive food drive between 14 and 17 July to celebrate Mandela Day. And over 5,000 people across the country joined hands as they packed all the food countrywide, destined for FoodForward and distribution to those most in need.

“Thank you, South Africa,” said Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, Transformation Director of Pick n Pay. “It has been amazing to see so many people come together to help their fellow South Africans.

“We’ve been humbled by the number of people who donated food, and to the thousands of people across the country who formed human chains to sort and pack the food as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela. It’s heart-warming to see people coming together like this.”

Pick n Pay is FoodForward SA’s biggest retail partner, and last year donated over R90m in edible food to them – enough to provide seven million meals.

Managing Director of FoodForward SA Andy du Plessis said, “We want to thank the generous people of South Africa and Pick n Pay for the overwhelming support for our Mandela Day Food Drive.

“Together we collected 130 tons of food from Pick n Pay stores and over 5,000 volunteers sorted and packed the food across the country, during their 67 minutes.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign and made it an overwhelming success. This was the true spirit of national building in action.”

Ackerman-Berman said: “Madiba once said ‘it always seems impossible until it is done’. We are honoured to have partnered with our fellow South Africans in marking 67 minutes of service to the country.”
