Sun City’s multiple award winning Gary Player Golf Course has been ranked amongst the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 2016 / 2017 by Golf Digest. The course ranked 99th and was one of only three South African courses to be named in the top 100, which was dominated by courses with proximity to the sea.
The 7,747 yards, par-72 championship Gary Player Golf Course is one of the most difficult and demanding courses in southern Africa. Home to the prestigious Nedbank Golf Challenge, which is now part of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, it is also one of the most well kept courses, managed by PGA Professional Quintin Byleveldt. Both the Gary Player Golf Course and the Lost City Golf Course were designed by well-known South African golfing legend, Gary Player.
When first laid out in 1979 by American Ron Kirby and his then-design partner Gary Player, the course occupied a mountain valley in the independent state of Bophuthatswana, which has since reunited with South Africa. The course features huge flowery bunkers and massive greens, as well as an island green on the par-4 ninth, making for an exciting and challenging golfing experience.
Sun City recently revised the course rates to ensure accessibility of both the Gary Player Golf Course and Lost City Golf Course. The rate structure, now the same for both courses, has also been considerably simplified, making it easier for golfers and groups to choose their option, book and play.
