One of the latest entries into the South African highly competitive car market is the Hyundai
Exeter. The Exter does not look like your typical Hyundai car but that is not going to stop the
good-looking compact crossover SUV from becoming a top seller in the entry-level car market in
SA.
The all-new Exter comes well equipped with a full arsenal of features and very attractive design
elements – attributes that are needed as a contender in the fiercely competitive, and largest,
crossover and SUV market segment that accounts for almost 38% of overall sales to date this
year.
Three equipment levels and five variants are available – The Exter 1.2 Premium (manual
transmission) and 1.2 Premium AMT (automated manual transmission); the Exter 1.2 Executive
(manual) and 1.2 Executive AMT; and the flagship Exter 1.2 Elite AMT.
Bold exterior
The all-new Hyundai EXTER features a progressive and unique crossover SUV design
showcasing Hyundai’s identity of “Sensuous Sportiness”, characterised by a modern front,
dynamic side and sporty rear design. The DNA of Hyundai’s crossover SUV line-up is also
evident from the front grille design and the positioning of the daytime running lights (DRLs), with
its LEDs in a signature H-shape, above the halogen headlights. The H-signature design is
repeated in the rear lights of the Exter.
The dynamism of the Exter is evident from its bold and muscular wheel arch cladding that lends
a fresh appeal to the car’s profile. With distinctively carved character lines and parametric
garnish on the C-pillar, Hyundai’s EXTER looks edgy and attractive from every angle.
Other standout features outside are the sporty bridge-type roof rails with a 70kg load capacity
(for Executive and Elite variants); dynamic rear spoiler; sharkfin antenna; LED turn indicators on
outside mirrors (for Premium AMT and all Executive and Elite variants); and the signature-H
LED tail lamps.
There are six exterior colour options available across the range: Atlas White, Cosmic Blue,
Tomboy Khaki, Fiery Red, Titan Grey and Starry Night. Customers can also choose from three
two-tone options for the Executive and Elite versions: Cosmic Blue with a black roof; Tomboy
Khaki with a black roof, or Atlas White also paired with a black roof.
Comfortable interior
There’s ample head and shoulder room to make even a long journey comfortable. The interior
further features a sporty 3D pattern finish dashboard, complemented by a leather-wrapped
steering wheel and gear knob (for Executive and Elite variants), and a sporty black finish with
colour inserts.
Seat cover schemes range from obsidian black with a grey trim to black with a blue trim, and
black with a sage trim – all linked in different combinations with exterior colours. The Premium
and Executive variants come with cloth seats, while the Elite’s seats are covered with a mixture
of cloth and artificial leather material.
The perfectly balanced ergonomics of the Hyundai EXTER also bring with it many more
standard features, such as driver seat height adjustment; adjustable rear headrests; a
dashboard tray; and front and rear door map pockets among others.
In front of the driver is an advanced digital instrument cluster with various features such as a
4.2-inch colour TFT multi-information display; a tyre pressure monitoring system and parking
distance information.
A centre-mounted infotainment system with an 8-inch high-definition screen and smartphone
connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard across the range. The screen also
displays the rear-view parking camera’s image in the Executive and Elite versions.
Safety
There’s nearly nothing the Exeter’s robust and reliable safety does not offer, counting from six
airbags (dual front, side and curtain); child seat anchors (ISOFIX) on the outer seats of the rear
bench; an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution; a speed sensing
auto door lock; a tyre pressure monitoring system; and rear parking sensors.
The Hyundai Exter comes equipped with a very fuel-efficient 1.2-litre Kappa 4-cylinder petrol
engine that offers refinement and smooth acceleration. Maximum power output is 61 kW at 6
000 r/min., and it reaches peak torque output of 114 Nm at 4 000 r/min.
