Kaizer Chiefs are proud to announce the appointment of Steve Komphela as our new head coach, after the former Bafana Bafana captain signed a three year deal with the Amakhosi.
Komphela succeeds Stuart Baxter, who recently left the club by mutual consent after securing the Absa Premiership title at the end of last season.
“We are delighted to welcome Steve back to Kaizer Chiefs,” said club chairman Kaizer Motaung. “Steve was here as a player and he started his coaching career at our club, when he was the assistant to Muhsin Ertugral for the 2001/2002 season.
“Three weeks ago we gathered to bid farewell to Stuart Baxter. We needed to plug the gap. We went through 25 to 30 CV’s, mainly from overseas. However, there were also some coaches from the African continent that applied. I was extremely impressed with his knowledge of the game and his plans for the team, and I felt he was clearly the best candidate to build upon our recent success and continue that into the future,” he added.
“Steve has paid his dues as a coach and he deserves the platform at Kaizer Chiefs to explore his potential.”
The 47-year-old becomes the first ex-Chiefs player to be appointed head coach in the PSL era of the club and is the first local coach to take the helm since 1994. He has a wealth of experience in domestic football, having coached Manning Rangers, Dynamos, Platinum Stars, Free State Stars and Maritzburg United in the PSL. He has also had stints in charge of the national Under-20s, Under-23s and the senior national team, where he has worked effectively with a number of Kaizer Chiefs players.
Komphela expressed his appreciation at being given the opportunity to rejoin the Kaizer Chiefs family. “I am very happy to be back at the biggest club in the country and I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to the chairman for showing faith in my ability to carry this great footballing institution forward and I shall give my utmost to bring further silverware to Naturena and its millions of supporters,” he said.
The team is expected back for pre-season testing and training on Thursday, 18 June.
