STANDARD BANK JOY OF JAZZ CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

The 2017 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz marks the 20th Anniversary of a leading brand on South Africa’s jazz calendar. Whilst the festival itself celebrates two decades of brilliance, the dynamic team that makes it possible, T Musicman, will be celebrating 30th years of excellence in the industry.

To celebrate the auspicious event, a legion of international giants and luminaries of the jazz world, as well as leading lights of South African jazz will descend on Johannesburg to celebrate the momentous event at the Sandton Convention Centre for three days from September 28 to 30.

Event executive producer Peter Tladi of T-Musicman is overjoyed and proud of this year’s artist line up and overall festival offering. He believes it’s a line up befitting the unique occasion; and will project the meaning of the hard-work and passion that went into building one of Africa’s most important jazz festival.
Tladi said: “We, as festival producers, spend a great deal of time both here and overseas seeking out artists whom we believe will appeal to a wide spectrum of music fans. We want to present a diverse range of jazz styles inclusive of the giants of jazz and the upcoming young lions. There is something for everyone in this year’s line-up which, we believe, is international and truly inspirational. The event reinforces its status as South Africa’s foremost jazz festival, and one of the best on the African continent, thanks to our stellar line-up of musicians.”

Six-time Grammy® Award nominee Nnenna Freelon, who has earned a well-deserved reputation as a compelling and captivating live performer, will be one of the stars on the opening night of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. She will share the honours on the Dinaledi Stage with celebrated South African jazz vocalist Tutu Puoane, Thandiswa Mazwai Belede Jazz Project which featuresNduduzoMakhathini, Herbie Tsoaeli, Ayanda Sikade, Mthunzi Mvubu,and an interesting musical concept, Ramsey Lewis versus Roy Ayers.
The line up includes three-time Grammy Award® winner Branford Marsalis, who has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music, sax maestro Joshua Redman and his Quartet, The Clayton Brothers, Jeff and John, and the MAC Power Triowith David Murray, Geri Allen and Terri Lyne Carrington from the US.
Other big international names in the jazz world include the five time Grammy award winning American virtuoso bassist Christian McBride,one of the most recorded musicians of his generation, appearing on more than 300 recordings as a sideman, and we include, the popular Mali superstar Salif Keita, Uganda’s Somi, Lesotho’s TsepoTshola,Malehand Bhudaza Mapefane.
South African greats billed for this year’s edition are legends Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Caiphus Semenya, while younger generation artists such asZoe Modiga the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Winner, Benjamin Jephtathe Standard Bank Jazz Award winner, Brenda Mtamboand the Madiba Bay Jazz Orchestra with special appearances of PhindaMatlalaMtya and Sisonke Xonthiwill also feature.

Dutch superstar Peter Beets will be performing with his trio (Marius Beets and Gijs Dijkhuizen), featuring saxophonist andvocalist Alexander Beets. Jazz pianistBeets has shared the stage with musicians that include Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater and George Coleman during his illustrious career.
American singer and songwriter Musiq Soulchild (Taalib Johnson) will also feature prominently dispensing his own brand of music that blends R&B, funk, blues, jazz and gospel fused with hip hop.He has received a number of awards from Billboard, BET, ASCAP, BMI, and Soul Train.He has also earned award nominations from MTV, the American Music Awards, the NAACP, and 11 Grammy nominations, including 3 for his 2007 album “Luvanmusiq.”
French-bornElisabeth Kontomanou is a vocalist with seven albums to her credit has performed around the globe with some of the biggest names in music, including Michel Legrand, Darryl Hall and Toots Thielemans. She moved to New York in the 1990s and then on to Stockholm where she was based for awhile, returning later to the US. She has performed at a number of major jazz festivals and comes to Standard Bank Joy of Jazz with a fresh repertoire.
Other highlights will include performances by theStandard BankNational Youth Jazz Bandand Selaelo Selota, the noted South African guitarist, composer, producer and teacher.
Standard Bank Joy of Jazz takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre, for three days on four stages – Dinaledi, Conga, Mbira and Diphala and over 30 performances.

Audiences will be able to buy the OPENING NIGHT ticket for Thursday, 1 DAY FESTIVAL PASS for either Friday or Saturday and 2 DAYS FESTIVAL PASS providing access for Friday and Saturday.

The 2017 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is produced by T-Musicman and brought to audiences by Standard Bank in association with the Department of Arts & Culture; Gauteng Province, the City of Johannesburg, Tsogo Sun and MNS Attorneys.

Tickets are on sale at Computicket atR700 for the Opening Night, R795 for a Day Pass and R1350 for a two day pass.

Tickets are available at Computicket (both online and instore) and Standard Bank cardholders, qualify for a discount. All debit or cheque card holders get a 10% discount, and a 15% discount if using a Standard Bank credit card.
