In an increasingly complex world, where innovation and problem-solving are
paramount, the need for proficiency in mathematics and science has never been
greater. Yet, South African learners continue to struggle, performing below the
international average in these critical subjects.
What is the solution???
Recognizing this challenge, Primestars and The YouthStart Foundation, along with
various key implementing partners, has dedicated the past 14 years to equipping
Grade 12 learners with the tools they need to excel in their Maths and Physical
Science examinations.
According to a government gazette published in October 2023, the country continues
to face a shortage of critically skilled personnel such as engineers, data scientists,
climate scientists etc. The demand for STEM-trained professionals far outweighs the
current capacity and supply which hinders South Africa’s economic growth and
innovation capabilities.
On the 15th of August, hosted by Standard Bank at their Command Centre in
Marshalltown Johannesburg, the corporate sector and government gathered to
celebrate the impact of the eduCate programme.
At the event held, Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Siviwe Gwarube, lauded the
programme’s impact, stating, “Maths and science play a crucial role in preparing
students for the future by equipping them with essential skills for a rapidly evolving
job market. The poor uptake of STEM subjects in public schools and the low Matric
pass rates are deeply concerning. The eduCate programme is a powerful
intervention that not only improves exam results but also shapes the futures and
vocations of our young people. We need more partners and more investment to
ensure that no learner is left behind.”
She further emphasized the importance of STEM education in driving economic
growth and ensuring a prosperous future for the nation.
“It deeply saddens me to note that the limited resources in lower quintile public
schools, and the shortage of revision support for matric learners, have contributed to
a low pass rate in these critical subjects,” Minister Gwarube said. “The eduCate
programme is a powerful tool in addressing this gap. However, we need more
partners. We need more investment! Programmes like these contribute to shaping
the futures and vocations of our young people, and it is imperative that we continue
to expand our efforts.”
The Minister’s remarks highlighted the crucial role that public-private partnerships
play in the success of educational initiatives. She urged more companies and
organizations to join forces with the Department of Basic Education and Primestars
to scale up the impact of such programmes.
The eduCate: Matric Maths and Science Revision programme has and continues to
make great strides, providing focused lessons countrywide, helping learners gain
access to tertiary courses that require maths and science. The majority of
participating learners come from non-fee-paying schools at under-resourced
township and rural areas.
EduCate uses a variety of different media and platforms to assist learners and make
quality revision content accessible which covers the entire Math and Science CAPS
curriculum accessible. A unique cinema model utilizing conventional movie theatres
throughout the country, an interactive online website and in-school interventions,
make this one of the most far-reaching initiatives of its kind.
The “theatres of learning” concept consists of learners being transported from their
schools to cinemas where they received a popcorn and soft drink combo, learning
materials and 20 hours of pre-recorded Mathematics and Physical Science revision
tutorials. 10 hours for Maths and 10 hours in total for Physical Science. The cinema
experience is then also taken to rural schools.
With the 2024 implementation underway, there is no doubt the beneficiaries will
continue to thrive. The programme and its edutainment implementation model has
proven itself to be one of the most powerful interventions of its kind. The eduCate
Class of 2023 showed average improvements of 14,8% for Mathematics and 13,4%
in Physical Science.
Key facilitating corporate partners in the programme include Standard Bank, Liberty,
Protea Chemicals, OMNIA, BME, Bidvest Services International, Bidvest Services
South Africa, Cell C, AECI,Spar South Rand, Smollan, WDB Investment Holdings,
PIC, Zutari, Richfield, Sasria, Attacq, PWC, Sizwe IT, Transunion, Rohlig-Grinrod,
Success Stories: Learners Speak Out
The success of the eduCate programme is best reflected in the achievements of its
past beneficiaries. Learners who have participated in the programme have gone on
to excel in their final exams, gaining access to prestigious tertiary institutions and
pursuing careers in STEM fields.
Asiel Matalingwane, a previous beneficiary from Commtech Comprehensive School
in the Free State, shared, “The eduCate Maths & Science programme helped me get
distinctions in both subjects. It made my final examination journey easier by focusing
on examination-type questions. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in
Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, thanks to this program.”
Thandolwethu Mangena, another success story from Dawnview High School in
Gauteng, added, “The programmes focus on practical applications and problem-
solving strategies boosted my confidence and enhanced my understanding of
complex subjects. Now, as I pursue my BSc in Microbiology at the University of
Pretoria, I can attest to the significant impact this program has had on my academic
journey.”
Executive Statements:
“To the Class of 2024, you can be proud of yourselves for reaching this pivotal moment
in your educational journey. As you navigate the uncertainties of the future, know that
