On Tuesday, 6 May 2025, South Africa proudly assumed leadership of the Values 20 (V20) initiative under the G20 umbrella, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this global movement centred on values-based policy and development. The media launch occurred at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, an iconic venue symbolising justice, democracy, and human dignity.
Under the theme “Living Values: Enabling Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainable Development,” the event brought together influential leaders, thinkers, and changemakers to unveil South Africa’s V20 agenda, grounded in the principles of Ubuntu, dignity, ethical governance, accountability, and equity.
Opening the programme, Dr. Preeya Daya, Co-Chair of V20 South Africa, underscored the urgency of embedding values into leadership at all levels. “This moment is about restoring our moral compass,” said Dr. Daya. “In a time when the world is searching for meaningful solutions, South Africa offers something deeply human, Ubuntu. Through V20, we show that values are not abstract ideals, but practical instruments for building inclusive, just, and sustainable societies.”
The event featured keynote remarks from Prof Bonang Mohale, Sherpa of V20 South Africa, and a special video message by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Shepherd of V20 South Africa. A dynamic panel discussion followed, featuring Moss Mashishi, Dr. Roger Latchman, Irfaan Mangera and Tabea Tshesane, who explored the role of ethical leadership and inclusive policy in addressing pressing national and global challenges such as inequality, social division, and climate injustice.
As South Africa steps into this influential global leadership role, V20 South Africa calls on the government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to shape a values-driven future within the G20 framework.
