The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will host the 6th annual Local
Government Labour Law Seminar (ALGLLS) from 18 – 19 March 2024 at the Premier Hotel, OR
Tambo, Kempton Park in Gauteng. This year's seminar, themed RE-SHAPING THE LABOUR
RELATIONS SYSTEM TO ADDRESS MUNICIPAL SUSTAINABILITY IMPERATIVES, tackles
the critical need to adapt labour practices in light of evolving municipal realities.

The 6th Annual Local Government Labour Law Seminar offers a platform for delegates to stay
ahead of the curve in local government labour law, connect and collaborate with peers on
critical issues, share best practices, advocate for change through effective capacity-building
programs, find solutions to common challenges by developing practical strategies, and shape
the future of labour relations by sharing their experiences and insights with SALGA to inform
sector-wide improvements. This dynamic platform empowers delegates and propels
municipalities forward, fostering a collaborative spirit and paving the way for a more sustainable
future.

The seminar will delve into five crucial sub-themes: reimagining collective bargaining, analysing
the impact of recent case law, navigating policy reforms, mastering crisis resolution
mechanisms, and handling labour relations within essential services. The seminar's flexible
format allows participation in person or virtually, ensuring wider accessibility while maintaining a
secure and engaging environment.

Beyond information sharing, the seminar fosters an environment where participants gain
insights into the latest local government labour law developments and actively generate
solutions to challenges, fostering collaboration through thought leadership, networking, and best

practice sharing. This collaborative spirit extends to advocacy, with SALGA championing
effective capacity-building programs that empower municipalities. SALGA leverages the insights

gained to assess sector-wide capacity development needs in the labour relations arena, paving
the way for lasting improvements that benefit everyone.

Rio Nolutshungu, Chief Officer of Municipal Capabilities and Governance, emphasises,
"Sustainable service delivery is the cornerstone of local government. This seminar delves into
the multifaceted concept of sustainability, encompassing financial health, employee relations,
performance, and environmental responsibility. By reimagining our labour relations system, we
can unlock a more sustainable future for our municipalities and the communities they serve."
