Joburgers are known to love a good party and its senior citizens are no different. On Wednesday, 1 June 2016, the festival will kick-off its Road to Standard Bank Joy of Jazz campaign with its community outreach programme, Jazz Cares.
To date, Jazz Cares has helped bring the arts as well as live entertainment to communities with limited access to amenities. Communities such as Diepsloot, Soweto, Alexandra and Newtown have seen its senior citizens, the disabled and community workers in hospices, orphanages and social welfare centres benefit from this annual Arts, Health & Lifestyle inspired programme.
“Through Jazz Cares we are able to include communities on the outskirts while expanding the circle of people given the opportunity to experience the richness of our country’s music and arts culture”, commented Standard Bank Executive Head: Group Brand and Sponsorship, Jenny Pheiffer.
This year 300 elderly residents from the Nirvana Old Age Centre, JD Opperman and Nancefield Old Age Home will get the opportunity to enjoy a live performance from the Jazz ensemble, the Eldorado Jazz Band, right at their doorstep.
“As a city, we always strive to ensure that all citizens are able to access as well as enjoy the rich cultural offerings and facilities availed to them through private and government partnerships such as this, so we are extremely excited to bring Jazz Cares to Region G”, commented Executive Director: City of Jo’burg Community Development, Ms Dudu Maseko
The day promises to be filled with great food, camaraderie, song and dance moves dating back from the 40s and 50s; from the Jitterburg, Swing, Lindy to the Jive, the Nirvana Old Age Centre will be abuzz as the young and old battle it out on the dance floor.
“Music has the ability to speak a universal language to a diverse audience without the common misinterpretation often found in language. This unique element, has enabled Jazz Cares to act as a vehicle in bringing together the younger generation and its older counterparts in a fun environment”, concluded Standard Bank Joy of Jazz producer, Mantwa Chinoamadi.
