Over the past few weeks, White Star Super Maize Meal has been hosting various Stokvel Cooking Challenge Semi Finals. Initially 12 Stokvels were selected to compete in the regional finals in North West, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. One winner from each province was chosen to compete in the National Finals, hosted in Johannesburg on 3 May 2014.

At the National Finals, each Stokvel went about showing off their culinary skills resulting in an array of mouth-watering meals with mesmerising aromas being served. This made the judges decisions tough, but at the end of any competition, there must be a winner. Vubela Stokvel won the grand prize of R20 000, second runner up was Sethebe,Club who walked away with R10 000, third prize went to All Saints Group who won R3 500 and fourth prize went to Faranani Social Club who won R1 500.

“Stokvels have been around in South Africa for many years and have become a social highlight in many communities. They are a place where people connect and are a staple in Mzansi culture,” says White Star Marketing Manager Mokhele Makhothi.  “With White Star bringing families, friends and communities together and being a fundamental part of our country’s culture, it is the perfect ingredient to have at any Stokvel.”

“White Star would like to congratulate the winner and runners up of the Stokvel Cooking Challenge. Look out for the next Stokvel Cooking Challenge, we’d love to see you there,” concludes Makhothi.
