Nedbank, in association with The Sports Trust and the Department of Sport and Recreation unveiled a R1 million multi-purpose sport facility to Musenga Vhadzimu Primary School in Diepsloot.
The donation forms part of the Nedbank Cup’s sports development programme amply named Goals4Goals in partnership with The Sports Trust. For every goal scored during this year’s campaign, the bank donated R10 000 towards the erection of the facility. In addition, 100 schools across the country received soccer kits while the top goal scorer in each round received R10 000 for themselves and another R10 000 for a school of their choice.
In less than five years, Nedbank and The Sports Trust have invested more than R7 million towards soccer development at nearly 500 schools across South Africa. “As a bank for all, Nedbank is highly involved in the communities it serves. Schools play a pivotal role in creating social cohesion and a values driven, knowledge based economy. Musenga Vhadzimu has an excellent academic and sporting record. We are confident that our involvement will enable the learners to make their goals happen,” said Thulani Sibeko, Nedbank’s Group Executive for Marketing, Communications and Corporate Affairs.
The school opened its doors in 2004 with just 285 learners. The number has increased to 1586 within ten years. It uses sport as a vehicle to foster discipline and inspiration to drive academic excellence and self-belief in each student.

“We are thrilled that Nedbank and The Sports Trust have selected us as beneficiaries. The best thing about this facility is that it will not only benefit our pupils but also the community and learners of Diepsloot. So it will go a long way in contributing to the elimination of the social ills within the community,” said Rose Segale, Principal of Musenga Vhadzimu. ..

The school has achieved major success on the sporting fields despite its short existence. Some of their achievements include being crowned regional netball champions in 2012 and regional under 15 football champions in 2013. In addition to this, two youngsters from the school were selected to be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Soccer Academy.

Anita Matthews, Operations Executive from The Sports Trust said, “It’s pleasing to be part of yet another initiative which seeks to contribute towards sport development in South Africa. We formed The Sports Trust with Nedbank in 1995 and our partnership has been instrumental in broadening the appeal of sporting codes in our country.”

The fully equipped and highly durable outdoor court caters for soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis. It is maintenance free, eco-friendly, and provides lateral forgiveness on the leg joints.
