At its Cape Town anniversary celebration, Salt Employee Benefits brought together voices from across the retirement fund ecosystem to reflect on seven decades of change and unveiled a commemorative coffee table book documenting the people, progress and perspectives that have shaped the industry.<\/i><\/div>\n

7 September 2026, Cape Town:<\/b>\u00a0Salt Employee Benefits (Salt EB) celebrated 70 years in South Africa\u2019s retirement fund industry on Sunday, bringing together clients, members, industry leaders, labour representatives and other stakeholders to reflect on the journey of an industry that has undergone profound change over the past seven decades.<\/div>\n
Hosted by international keynote speaker, facilitator and author Siphiwe Moyo, the celebration was held in Durbanville, Cape Town. \u00a0The event looked beyond Salt EB\u2019s own milestone to consider the broader evolution of retirement provision in South Africa, from changes in legislation and governance to advances in administration, technology, member engagement and the growing emphasis on protecting member outcomes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Conversations throughout the day reflected on how far the industry has come, the lessons carried forward from its history and the work that remains to ensure South Africans can retire with greater dignity, security and confidence.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A key moment of the celebration was the unveiling of Salt EB\u2019s 70th anniversary coffee table book, a commemorative publication that places the company\u2019s seven-decade journey within the broader story of South Africa\u2019s retirement fund industry.\u00a0 The feat was observed with a panel discussion facilitated by Senior Communications Manager, Bianca Moyo and featured, SALT CXO, Nazlie Seegers, Head of Regulatory & Risk, Michael Dokakis and the Head of Public Relations from SALT\u2019s PR agency, North Star Communications, Neo Moretlwe. The conversation took the audience through the company\u2019s 70-year journey.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Rather than presenting the anniversary solely through the voice of the organisation, the book brings together perspectives from across the retirement ecosystem, including labour leaders, retirement fund professionals, trustees, administrators, industry partners, Salt EB employees and other stakeholders. Together, their reflections explore the evolution of the sector, the people it exists to serve and the responsibility the industry carries into its next chapter.<\/div>\n
\u201cDocumenting Salt EB\u2019s 70-year journey within South Africa\u2019s retirement fund industry was intentional. We wanted to reflect not only on our own experience, but on the people and institutions that have shaped this industry alongside us. For seven decades, our work has ultimately been about serving working people and helping to protect their financial dignity in retirement.<\/i><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n
\u201cIt was equally important that the book creates space for the voices of our stakeholders to reflect honestly on where the industry has come from, where it stands today and where we still need to go,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0said Nazlie Seegers, Chief Experience Officer at Salt Employee Benefits.<\/div>\n
The Cape Town celebration formed the second leg of Salt EB\u2019s 70th anniversary programme, following its Johannesburg event, which brought together key figures from across the retirement funds, financial services and labour sectors to reflect on how the industry has evolved since the introduction of the Pension Fund Act of 1956 and the significant developments that have shaped the sector over the past seven decades.<\/div>\n

Across the anniversary programme, conversations centred on the forces that have shaped the industry over the past 70 years, including regulatory evolution, governance and accountability, the role of labour, advances in technology and administration, and the importance of keeping members at the heart of the retirement system.<\/div>\n

For Eddie Strydom, Chairperson of Salt Employee Benefits, the milestone is therefore not only an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved, but also to consider the responsibility the industry carries into its next chapter.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSeventy years gives us a great deal to be proud of, but it also gives us a responsibility to ask what the next 70 years should look like. This industry exists because people entrust us with the savings, they have worked for over a lifetime. Whatever changes around us, that responsibility to the member must remain at the centre of what we do,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0said Strydom.<\/div>\n

As Salt EB marks this significant milestone, the organisation is looking beyond its own legacy to what the next chapter of South Africa\u2019s retirement fund industry should deliver. After 70 years of change, the challenge remains clear: to continue building an industry that protects members, earns their trust and helps secure greater dignity in retirement for generations to come.<\/div>\n
