The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has marked a significant milestone in South Africa-China relations with the launch of the first and only Confucius Institute in Tshwane. The historic initiative, established through a partnership between TUT, the Chinese International Education Foundation (CIEF), and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), is expected to strengthen educational cooperation, cultural exchange, language learning and digital skills development between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The official launch, held at TUT’s Pretoria Campus earlier this month, was attended by senior university leaders, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, academics, students and international partners. The establishment of the institute is being hailed as a major step forward in the university’s internationalisation strategy and a new chapter in educational collaboration between South Africa and China.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the launch ceremony, TUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, described the occasion as one of the most important moments in the university’s 22-year history. He said the institute would play a key role in promoting Chinese language learning, deepening understanding of Chinese culture and creating opportunities for collaboration in education, technology and research.<\/p>\n
“The launch of the Confucius Institute opens exciting opportunities for our students and staff while strengthening people-to-people ties between South Africa and China,” he said.<\/p>\n
Unlike traditional language centres, the new institute will incorporate a digital and intelligence-driven model that combines language education with innovation, technology and workforce development. University leaders believe this approach will position students to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy shaped by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n
TUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, Learning and Technology, Prof Ben van Wyk, noted that the institute would serve all TUT campuses through innovative digital platforms, potentially benefiting more than 65,000 students across Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. He added that the partnership with BUPT would enhance collaboration in telecommunications, artificial intelligence, information and communication technology, and digital education.<\/p>\n
Prof Yang Wei, President of the Chinese International Education Foundation, welcomed the partnership and highlighted its significance as the eighth Confucius Institute established in South Africa. He expressed confidence that the unique focus on science, technology and innovation would make the TUT-BUPT Confucius Institute a model for future educational cooperation.<\/p>\n
The Chinese Embassy in South Africa also pledged support for the initiative. Education Counsellor Fan Ding said the institute has the potential to become one of Africa’s leading centres for Chinese language and cultural studies while promoting stronger academic and cultural links between the two nations.<\/p>\n
The launch comes at a time when educational exchanges between South Africa and China continue to grow.
