Many financial decisions are made in the moment, whether responding to an unexpected expense, taking on credit, supporting family members, or managing rising household costs. Yet consumers do not always pause to assess how those decisions fit into their broader financial circumstances.<\/p>\n

As Money Smart Week South Africa 2026 continues this week, running until 30 August under the theme Money Smart: The Power of Possible, FNB is encouraging consumers to take stock of five key areas that can help build stronger money habits and support more confident financial decision-making.<\/p>\n

According to Moshibudi Sebola, Consumer Education Operations Manager at FNB, a simple financial check-in can help consumers identify potential risks, understand their obligations, and plan more effectively for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people focus on immediate financial decisions without regularly reviewing the bigger picture. Taking time to assess your spending, debt, savings, and financial goals can help you make choices that are better aligned with your circumstances and priorities,\u201d says Sebola.<\/p>\n

While financial literacy is often associated with complex concepts, practical financial management starts with understanding the basics. Regularly reviewing a few key areas can help consumers strengthen their financial resilience and make better use of the resources available to them.<\/p>\n

  1. Check where your money is going<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Start by comparing your income with your spending. Look at your bank statements and identify your regular expenses, including housing, transport, groceries, insurance, subscriptions, debt repayments and other commitments. Also take note of smaller recurring expenses. Seeing your spending in one place can help you identify your priorities and understand how much money is available for saving, debt repayment or other goals.<\/p>\n

    1. Check the full cost of credit<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      When considering credit, look beyond the monthly instalment.<\/p>\n

      Before signing an agreement, make sure you understand the interest rate, fees, repayment period and total amount payable. Consider how the repayment fits into your existing commitments and whether it remains manageable if your circumstances change.\u00a0If you already have debt, list each outstanding balance, repayment and applicable cost. This gives you a clearer picture of your overall position and can help you determine whether professional guidance may be appropriate.<\/p>\n

      1. Check your financial buffer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Unexpected expenses are a reality for most households, making some form of financial buffer an important consideration. Where your budget allows, set aside an amount regularly towards an emergency fund. It does not have to be a large amount to begin with. The objective is to build a habit of saving towards expenses that fall outside the normal monthly budget.<\/p>\n

        Your financial priorities should reflect your circumstances, including your income, household responsibilities and existing commitments.<\/p>\n

        1. Check before responding to financial requests<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Financial scams can arrive through SMS, email, phone calls, social media and messaging platforms, often using urgency to encourage an immediate response. Before clicking a link, sharing information or approving a transaction, stop and verify the request through an official channel.<\/p>\n

          Never share confidential banking information such as passwords, PINs or one-time passwords. Be particularly cautious when someone asks you to transfer money to another account or claims that immediate action like creating a virtual card is required to protect your funds. Perpetrators might even phone you pretending to be from FNB\u2019s fraud department.<\/p>\n

          1. Check that financial goals are still relevant<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Financial goals can change as life changes. A goal set a year ago may no longer reflect your current circumstances or priorities. Review what you are working towards, whether it is building savings, reducing debt, preparing for a major expense, starting a business or planning for longer-term needs. Break larger goals into manageable steps and review your progress regularly.<\/p>\n

            Making money knowledge part of everyday life<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Money Smart Week provides an opportunity to turn financial knowledge into practical action. A financial check-in does not need to be complicated or time-consuming. Even small steps, taken consistently, can help consumers stay informed, prepared and focused on their priorities.<\/p>\n
