According to the Limpopo provincial government, the Premier used the journey to share the province\u2019s vision for a similar high-speed rail link between Musina and Johannesburg.<\/p>\n
The proposed railway is expected to become one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Limpopo, potentially transforming passenger transport while strengthening economic links between Limpopo and Gauteng.<\/p>\n
For Ramathuba, China’s experience demonstrates what can be achieved when modern transport infrastructure is placed at the centre of economic development.<\/p>\n
China has built one of the world’s largest high-speed rail networks, connecting major cities and economic centres through trains capable of travelling at very high speeds. The Premier’s experience on the Chinese network has provided a practical example of how rail infrastructure can reduce travelling times and improve connectivity between regions.<\/p>\n
The proposed South African project forms part of broader plans for a high-speed rail corridor between Gauteng and Limpopo. The route is expected to serve important centres including Pretoria, Polokwane and areas further north towards Musina. Earlier planning has identified the Johannesburg\u2013Polokwane\u2013Musina corridor as one of the country’s proposed high-speed rail routes.<\/p>\n
Ramathuba has continued to promote the project as an important component of Limpopo’s economic development strategy. In her 2026 State of the Province Address, she reiterated the province’s ambition to make the Limpopo-Gauteng high-speed rail project a reality.<\/p>\n
A high-speed connection reaching Musina could have significance beyond passenger transport. The town is strategically positioned close to the Zimbabwean border and serves as an important gateway for regional trade. Improved rail infrastructure could therefore strengthen movement between South Africa, neighbouring countries and major economic centres.<\/p>\n
The proposed railway could also support tourism by making Limpopo’s destinations more accessible to visitors from Gauteng and other parts of the country. Faster connections between Johannesburg, Pretoria, Polokwane and northern Limpopo could encourage greater movement of tourists, businesspeople and investors.<\/p>\n
Another potential benefit would be reducing pressure on major roads such as the N1. A reliable high-speed rail service could provide travellers with an alternative to long-distance road transport while supporting more efficient movement along the north-south corridor.<\/p>\n
