This is Joburg’s return to the grid and South Africa’s eighth Box Cart Race overall, rolling back onto Sandton Drive on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The course is steep. The jumps are real. The only thing missing is your cart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Friday, 17 July 2026. That is the line. Teams of up to five can\u00a0submit\u00a0their cart concept and crew at\u00a0redbull.com\/boxcartza<\/a>, and the brief is simple: show the judges something wild enough, creative enough, and entertaining enough to earn a place on the grid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For the uninitiated: Red Bull Box Cart Race is a downhill race for hand built, completely engine free machines that have no business being on a road. Gravity only. No motors, no batteries, no catapults, no excuses. Your cart needs working steering and brakes because the hill is steep, and your crew is counting on you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every team rolls with a driver and a co-driver, up to five members in total. Before you race, you perform a skit at the start line to win over the judges. Then you point it downhill and hope for the best. Carts are judged on three things: speed,\u00a0creativity,\u00a0and showmanship. The fastest cart does not always take it. The one that tells a story nobody saw coming just might.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

South Africa\u00a0remains\u00a0the only African nation to host the race, and the local\u00a0track record\u00a0is properly entertaining. The most recent editions tore down the steep, cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap\u00a0in Cape Town, where the 2022 and 2024 races each drew more than 22,000 spectators. The reigning champions are the Potjie\u00a0Boytjies\u00a0from Stellenbosch, who took the crown on a potjie pot on wheels, proof that the best concept is the one nobody expects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 2026 global calendar is stacking up fast, with confirmed editions in Belfast, London,\u00a0Denver,\u00a0and Los Angeles. Now Sandton Drive joins the list. The only question left is whether your cart will be on it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
