Grocery shopping is one area where thoughtful planning can make a difference. It is not about buying less food, but about finding ways to get better value, reduce waste and make the food you buy go further”, said Mpudi Maubane, SPAR Group PR, Communications & Sponsorships.

Making everyday grocery shopping go further

Saving on groceries does not have to mean making drastic changes. Here are six practical ways to make your grocery budget work harder:

Plan meals before shopping: Decide what your family will eat during the week and choose versatile ingredients that can be used across several meals. This helps reduce unnecessary purchases and makes it easier to manage spending.

Check SPAR specials and compare value: Review available promotions before shopping and compare unit prices where possible. Buying items on promotion can offer value, particularly when they are products your household regularly uses. Avoid buying more than you need simply because an item is discounted.

Shop with a list: Prepare a shopping list based on your meal plan and household essentials. Having a clear list helps keep spending focused and reduces impulse purchases.

Make the most of what you already have: Check your fridge, freezer, and pantry before shopping. Using ingredients already at home can prevent duplicate purchases and help you make better use of your existing food.

Reduce food waste: Store food correctly, use older ingredients first and turn suitable leftovers into another meal. Planning portions carefully can also help prevent food from going to waste.

Choose convenience wisely: Where practical, preparing meals at home or cooking in batches can help households manage costs while saving time during busy weeks.

Build a small savings buffer: If your budget allows, set aside a modest amount after covering essential expenses. Even small, regular contributions can help build a reserve for unexpected costs over time.

Statistics South Africa has highlighted the scale of the country’s food waste challenge, reporting that approximately 10 million tonnes of food are wasted annually, equivalent to about one-third of South Africa’s annual food production.
