For many businesses, the festive season presents one of the strongest trading opportunities of the year. However, increased demand does not automatically translate into stronger cash flow or sustainable growth.<\/p>\n

\n

Businesses may need to commit money to stock, staff, marketing and delivery before the additional revenue comes in. They also need to ensure that customers can pay, orders can be fulfilled and enough cash remains available for the quieter period that follows.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe opportunity is not only to sell more during the festive season,\u201d says Janis Robson, Business Development Head at FNB. \u201cIt is to understand how money moves through the business, from the initial investment required to meet demand to the value that remains once the sale has been completed and the associated costs have been paid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

This is what it means to capture the flow.<\/p>\n

\n

Plan beyond the sale<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seasonal requirements will differ by business. A retailer may need more stock, a hospitality business may require additional staff and supplies, while an importer may need to pay for goods, freight, and foreign exchange before making a sale.<\/p>\n

\n

The starting point is a weekly view of expected income and expenses through to the end of January. This should include supplier payments, salaries, delivery costs, tax, returns, and other operating commitments.<\/p>\n

\n

This view can help a business identify when cash is likely to be under the most pressure and whether existing resources are sufficient. If funding is required, the amount and repayment period should be aligned to the purpose of the finance and the time it will take for the business to generate the expected return.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBusinesses should engage their bank early, with a clear view of what the funding will be used for, the margin expected from the opportunity and how it will be repaid,\u201d says Robson. \u201cThe decision should be based on a realistic assessment of demand, not the assumption that festive trading will automatically cover the cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make every transaction count<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stronger demand has limited value if the business cannot complete the payment or fulfil the order.<\/p>\n

\n

Before peak trading begins, businesses should test their payment devices, online checkout, connectivity, stock information, and fulfilment processes. Employees should also know what to do if a payment channel is unavailable or demand exceeds available stock.<\/p>\n

\n

For businesses selling through physical and digital channels, FNB Speedpoint and FNB Webstore can support in-person and online payments, stock management, and fulfilment.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers experience the business as one journey,\u201d says Robson. \u201cIf the payment fails, the stock information is incorrect or the order is delayed, the impact extends beyond a single transaction. It can affect trust and whether that customer chooses to return.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Businesses should also review payment-verification processes and the measures in place to protect stock, equipment, employees, and customer information during periods of higher activity.<\/p>\n

\n

Know what the business has retained<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A stronger December bank balance does not necessarily mean that all the money is available to spend.<\/p>\n

\n

Some of it may already be committed to suppliers, salaries, tax, refunds, stock replenishment, insurance, debt repayments, and early-year operating expenses. These commitments should be accounted for before the balance is used or reinvested.<\/p>\n

\n

The same discipline should be applied to promotions. A discount may increase sales while reducing the value retained from each transaction once stock, staffing, delivery, packaging, payment costs and returns have been included.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cTurnover tells a business how much it sold. It does not show how much value the business retained,\u201d says Robson. \u201cThe stronger measure is what remains after the full cost of generating and fulfilling those sales has been considered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Using a dedicated account, such as the FNB Gold Business Account, creates a clearer record of business income, expenses, and outstanding commitments. This can support planning and future funding discussions, although all credit applications remain subject to assessment. The objective is to retain enough cash for early-year obligations while ensuring that the business remains able to pursue its next viable growth opportunity.<\/p>\n

\n

Turn festive trading into business insight<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once the peak period has passed, businesses should assess which products, channels and promotions created value, where cash became tied up and whether new customers returned.<\/p>\n

\n

These insights can guide future decisions about pricing, inventory, staffing, funding, and customer retention.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cFestive demand does not look the same for all businesses, some are preparing higher demand, others for seasonal shutdowns and quieter trading periods, planning and preparing for cashflow is central to both. Our role is to understand what this period means for each business and help customers prepare for the opportunities and pressures ahead.\u201d Robson concludes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should provide a clearer view of what customers value, where the operation performed well and what needs to change before the next trading opportunity.
