Makro is focused on helping South African households make their grocery budgets go further. A Nedbank comparison found that Makro had the lowest-priced basket on everyday grocery essentials across seven major retailers. With well over 250 everyday grocery essentials price-checked every week, Makro is keeping its focus firmly on delivering value where it matters most – the total basket.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The price-checked products cover items that most regularly find their way into South African shopping baskets, rather than products selected for a once-off promotion. By checking them weekly, Makro says it can track changes in the market and respond to price movements on the groceries customers buy most often.<\/div>\n

For Nick Favager, VP, Merchandise, Food & Fresh at Massmart<\/b>, that distinction is important because shoppers increasingly judge value on what an entire grocery shop costs them.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSouth African consumers are strategic shoppers and very considered in how they spend. They are looking at specials, but they are also just as importantly looking at how far their total budget takes them,\u201d says Favager. \u201cThat means we have to think beyond the price of an individual product and focus on delivering value across the basket.\u201d<\/div>\n

Why track prices?<\/b><\/div>\n

Makro’s approach is based on the premise that a few rand saved or spent on individual items can add up quickly across a household grocery shop. Instead of focusing exclusively on promotional products, the retailer monitors a broader selection of over 250 frequently purchased grocery essentials every week.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cPrice leadership isn’t something you establish once and then assume will remain the same. Prices move, competitors move and customers’ budgets change and checking these products every week gives us a practical way of making sure we remain competitive where it matters most to households,\u201d says Favager.<\/div>\n

The approach comes as South Africans remain highly price-conscious when shopping for groceries. A recent Nedbank grocery comparison illustrated the differences that can emerge when everyday products are considered as a basket rather than individually. The comparison looked at ten grocery staples, including mielie meal, instant coffee, rice, soap and toilet paper – across seven major retailers. Makro had the lowest total basket in that particular comparison at R520,97<\/b>, compared with R538,04<\/a><\/b> for the second-lowest basket and R568,17<\/a><\/b> for the highest. Over time, the savings on everyday products can provide customers with meaningful budget relief.<\/div>\n
Moving beyond the weekly special<\/b><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n
Favager says though promotions will continue to play a role in helping customers save, they are only one part of delivering grocery value.<\/div>\n
\u201cFor a household working within a fixed grocery budget, what ultimately matters is how much of that budget is left after the essentials have been bought,\u201d he says. \u201cOur responsibility is therefore bigger than putting a few products on promotion. We need to continually look across the grocery basket and find ways to deliver low prices on the products customers need week after week.\u201d<\/div>\n

That is also why Makro believes price leadership should be demonstrated rather than simply claimed. \u201cPrice checking over 250 everyday products every week creates discipline around that commitment,\u201d says Favager. \u201cIt keeps us focused on what customers are actually putting into their baskets and on making sure we’re working continuously to deliver value across that basket.\u201d<\/div>\n
