With inland 95 petrol reaching R30 liter for the first time, the cost of a grocery shop is increasingly being measured not only by what consumers spend at the till, but also by what it costs to get there.<\/div>\n
\u00a0According to Statistics South Africa,<\/u><\/a> transport inflation reached 8.8% in August 2026, with annual fuel inflation at 20.0%.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is compared with food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation of 1.1% during the same period. This widening gap highlights an often-overlooked household expense: getting groceries home. The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group’s July 2026 Household Affordability Index <\/u><\/a>placed the average household monthly food basket at R5,530.52, while transport and electricity accounted for 62% of a worker’s wage, highlighting the competing demands facing households.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For consumers travelling by car, even a relatively short grocery trip can add to monthly expenses. At the current inland 95 petrol price of R30.25 a litre, a 20 km round trip in a vehicle using eight litres per 100 km would consume approximately 1.6 litres of fuel, costing around R48.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Over 52 weekly trips, that amounts to approximately R2,517 in fuel alone. \u201cIn times of rising costs, value is not only about finding the right price it is about making smarter choices across the entire shopping journey. A little planning, shopping closer to home and taking advantage of available savings can help households stretch their budgets further, without compromising on everyday essentials,\u201d says Mpudi Maubane, Group Head, PR, Communications & Sponsorships.<\/div>\n

As South Africa marks Transport Month, SPAR encourages shoppers to consider four simple ways to make their grocery budget work harder:<\/div>\n

  • Plan before shopping: Check what you have at home and prepare a shopping list to avoid unnecessary top-up trips.<\/li>\n
  • Consolidate shopping trips: Combine grocery shopping with other essential errands to reduce the number of journeys made during the month.<\/li>\n
  • Shop closer to home: Choose a nearby SPAR where it is convenient, reducing unnecessary travel for everyday essentials.<\/li>\n
  • Make use of available savings: Check weekly promotions and use SPAR Rewards when shopping to help maximise savings without buying more than needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
