The growing appetite among South African entrepreneurs to access international markets was clearly demonstrated when thousands of businesspeople converged on Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand for the 2026 China Homelife and Machinex Trade Fair.

Held from 23 to 25 September, the three-day exhibition brought Chinese manufacturers and African buyers together, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to explore products, negotiate with suppliers and establish relationships that could potentially grow into long-term business partnerships.

For township entrepreneurs and small businesses, the exhibition offered an important lesson: international trade is no longer only the domain of large companies. With the right knowledge, planning and financial resources, smaller businesses can also explore opportunities in global supply chains.

The scale of the event reflected the level of interest. Organisers reported that approximately 4,000 people attended within the first three hours of the opening day, while around 35,000 people had pre-registered. Organisers had expected approximately 25,000 visitors over the three days.

The exhibition brought together hundreds of Chinese exhibitors showcasing more than 10,000 products, ranging from machinery and electronics to household goods, furniture, textiles, building materials, appliances and other consumer products.

For stokvel members, the exhibition presents an interesting opportunity to rethink the traditional role of collective savings.

Many stokvels have historically focused on saving money for groceries, social events, funerals or other household needs. However, an increasing number of groups are exploring ways to use their collective financial strength for investment, entrepreneurship and wealth creation.

A well-organised stokvel could, for example, investigate opportunities to collectively purchase products, establish a trading business or support members who want to enter the retail and distribution sector. Such ventures would, however, require proper research, financial planning, legal compliance and careful assessment of suppliers before any investment is made.

The China Homelife exhibition provided a practical environment for entrepreneurs to ask questions directly to manufacturers and understand what is available in the international market.

It also offered an opportunity for South African businesses to learn more about sourcing, product development and potential partnerships.

The event attracted visitors from across Africa, including businesspeople from countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana. This gave the exhibition a wider continental dimension and demonstrated the potential for businesses to develop networks beyond South Africa.

According to organisers, visitor numbers during the first two days increased by about 12% compared with the previous year, indicating continued interest in China-Africa commercial relations.

For township businesses, the biggest opportunity may lie not simply in importing products, but in identifying gaps in local markets.

Entrepreneurs who understand what their communities need can potentially use international supplier networks to find products that address those needs. However, successful importing requires more than finding a cheap product. Businesses must consider transport costs, customs duties, quality standards, currency movements, taxes and after-sales support.

For Stokvel Talk readers, the message from the expo is clear: collective savings can become a foundation for collective economic opportunity.

As South Africa continues to strengthen its economic relationship with China, exhibitions such as China Homelife could provide township entrepreneurs and stokvel members with valuable exposure to new ideas, suppliers and markets.

The challenge now is for entrepreneurs to turn exposure into action – through research, partnerships, responsible investment and sustainable businesses that can create jobs and economic opportunities in their communities.

Stokvels and small businesses urged to look beyond saving and explore opportunities in international trade

[13

post-1188","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international
