Ratshidi Hall in Stateng Village became the setting for an important conversation about local economic development and international trade when Baobab Ubuntu Media hosted the Chinese Embassy and North West Business Chinese Zero-Tariff Market Policy Summit.
\nThe summit brought together representatives from the Chinese Embassy, North West Department of Economic Development, African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA), North-West University, traditional leadership, academia, farmers and members of the local community to explore how South African producers and businesses can better understand and prepare for opportunities in the Chinese market.
\nA key focus of the summit was to demystify China's zero-tariff policy, explain the requirements for products seeking preferential market access and help local businesses understand the importance of\u00a0Rules of Origin and Certificates of Origin.
\nThe event also placed the spotlight on the need to ensure that market-access opportunities translate into practical benefits for communities, particularly farmers, small
\nbusinesses, young entrepreneurs and emerging producers.
\nKgosana\u00a0Koketso Rakhudu\u00a0delivered a Community Leadership Excellence Address in
\nwhich he linked the summit to what he described as\u00a011 years of grounded<\/p>\n
leadership\u00a0aimed at repurposing the village economy towards self-sufficiency, export
\nreadiness and generational wealth.
\nHis message was that communities should not simply wait for international opportunities
\nto arrive, but should prepare themselves to participate in global trade.
\n\u201cWe are not just opening doors to China \u2013 we are preparing our people to walk through
\nthem with products, skills and ownership,\u201d Rakhudu said.
\nRepresentatives of the Chinese Embassy emphasised that the zero-tariff policy creates
\nan opportunity for African producers, but that businesses need to understand the
\nChinese market and meet the relevant requirements.
\nThe discussions highlighted the growing role of digital trade and e-commerce in
\nconnecting small and medium-sized enterprises with consumers. Speakers noted that
\ntechnology is changing traditional trading models and creating new possibilities for
\nbusinesses to reach customers across borders.
\nAgriculture featured prominently in the discussions, with South African products such as
\nfruit, citrus, apples, macadamia nuts and other agricultural products identified as areas
\nwhere producers can explore opportunities, subject to meeting the relevant market and
\nregulatory requirements.
\nSpeakers also stressed the importance of\u00a0local value addition, encouraging producers
\nto consider processing, packaging and other activities that can create additional
\neconomic opportunities within South African communities.
\nAgricultural economist\u00a0Dr Gideon Chitanga\u00a0encouraged farmers and businesses to
\nwork together, exchange information and build networks that can assist them in
\nnavigating international markets.
\nThe participation of\u00a0North-West University students\u00a0brought a strong youth and
\neducation dimension to the summit, while traditional leadership and community
\nrepresentatives helped connect the international trade discussion to the realities and
\naspirations of local communities.<\/p>\n
For Baobab Ubuntu Media, the summit provided a platform to bring global economic
\ndiscussions closer to communities and to encourage greater understanding of
\ninternational trade opportunities.
\nThe event highlighted that opening a market is only the beginning. Producers still need
\nthe knowledge, skills, quality products, documentation, logistics and business
\nrelationships required to participate successfully in international trade.
\nThe Mahikeng summit therefore called for continued cooperation between government,
\nfarmers, businesses, academic institutions, traditional leadership and Chinese partners
\nto ensure that communities are equipped to make informed use of emerging trade
