\nYet despite their value, many people fail to consider what will happen to these assets when they
\npass away.
\n"Traditionally, estate planning focused on tangible assets such as property and investments. Today,
\nmany individuals have built extensive digital footprints and may own digital assets that hold
\nfinancial, personal or sentimental value. Without proper planning, loved ones may face significant
\nchallenges accessing or managing these assets after death," says Heather Muller, Estate Product

\nWhat are digital assets?
\nA digital asset is any asset, account or information that exists in electronic form. These can include:

\n\uf0b7 Online banking and investment accounts
\n\uf0b7 Digital wallets and cryptocurrency
\n\uf0b7 Cloud storage platforms

\n\uf0b7 Domain names and websites
\n\uf0b7 Online business platforms
\n\uf0b7 Subscription services and digital content
\nWhile some of these assets may have financial value, others may hold important personal
\ninformation or treasured memories that families wish to preserve.
\nThe challenges loved ones may face
\nOne of the biggest misconceptions is that family members can automatically access a loved one's
\nonline accounts after their death.<\/p>\n
In reality, privacy laws, security measures and platform-specific policies often make access far more
\ncomplicated.
\nDifferent digital platforms apply different rules when an account holder passes away. Some allow
\naccounts to be memorialised, while others permit the permanent deletion of accounts upon request.
\nIn many cases, platforms require proof of death and supporting documentation before providing any
\nassistance.
\nWithout clear instructions, family members may find themselves struggling to identify digital assets,
\nretrieve important information or manage online accounts.
\n"Many people do not realise the extent of their digital estate until they start documenting it. The
\nchallenge for family members is that these assets often remain hidden behind usernames,
\npasswords and security measures. Proper planning can help reduce uncertainty and administrative
\nburdens for loved ones," says Muller.
\nWhy digital assets should form part of your estate plan
\nAlthough a Will remains one of the most important estate planning tools available, it is equally
\nimportant to consider how digital assets will be managed after death.
\nEstate planning should include clear instructions regarding digital assets, including who should be
\nresponsible for managing them and what should happen to them.
\nThis may include:
\n\uf0b7 Closing certain accounts.
\n\uf0b7 Preserving digital memories, photographs and videos.
\n\uf0b7 Managing online business interests.
\n\uf0b7 Transferring digital assets with financial value.
\n\uf0b7 Memorialising social media accounts where appropriate.
\nImportantly, sensitive information such as passwords should not generally be included directly in a
\nWill, as a Will may become a public document during the administration process.
\nInstead, individuals should consider maintaining a secure record of digital accounts and login
\ninformation that can be accessed by a trusted individual when required.
\nCreating a digital estate plan
\nAs part of a comprehensive estate plan, individuals should consider creating a digital asset inventory.<\/p>\n
This inventory should include:

\n\uf0b7 Information about digital assets with financial value.
\n\uf0b7 Details of digital subscriptions and memberships.
