Pula is a Setswana word for rain. In the olden days rain was not only important source of livelihood for communities but also the inter eco system hence people would even pray for it. Today the name is also associated with these formal group Pula Burial Society.
Like rain every time it comes down people welcome it with warm hearts. And this is exactly what these group represent at their funerals, comfort or a blue rain.
Freda Tonisi Vice Secretary told Stokvel talk ,:”We are not just a group of people, but a formal structure with mandate to provide services to our members.
We are rain during drought, like a family that need each other especially during sad days like funerals.
It is during those tough times that we bring comfort to broken hearts, “she said,
The organization which is now 32 years old started by 6 members and grew to 45 members today. And the main reason why it was established was mainly to help bury members with dignity they deserve.
The club which has since grown bigger and stronger with time is still looking for new members. However one has to meet certain conditions.
Freda said,: “We still open for new members but one has to submit a copy of a South African Identity be between 21 and 75 years of age.
Because we are a formal group we then saw a need to keep records of members. But again we deal with members finances these formalities are necessary.,Tonisi concluded,
