Glencore Coal celebrated 52 graduates as part of its Portable Skills Training programme which aims to empower and upskill the youth within its host communities. The ceremony saw the successful candidates honoured with certificates for their display of excellence, dedication and commitment to upskilling themselves with the hopes of contributing to their future.
The purpose of the Portable Skills Training Programme is to upskill the youth by providing them with the necessary training and skills development resources that will allow them to use their talents and abilities to add value in their communities, making them employable in various industries. The training programme has since provided life-changing skills to over 3 000 young participants, allowing them to access the job market or start their own businesses to benefit their families and communities at large.
“It is our honour to congratulate all the successful graduates on such an outstanding achievement and showcasing their commitment and dedication to completing their training. Our commitment to continuously contribute to the progress of the communities near our operations remains true. The Portable Skills programme marked a significant shift in the lives of community members and the candidates that successfully completed their training, as we were able to transfer skills and give the opportunity to help them thrive.” Said Sibusiso Mbebe, Community Development Superintendent at Glencore. “We are so proud of our graduates and look forward to seeing how they will use their skills for the betterment of the community and the economy.” he concluded.

In addition to the group that graduated in Hospitality, Beauty, Agricultural Practises, Sewing, Carpentry, and Welding courses in February 2023, the training programme welcomed a fresh group of graduates who successfully completed their training in Agriculture, Firefighting and Plumbing.
“Through the programme, I will be able to become part of the South African workforce and use the skills that I have learned to contribute positively to our economy as I now have the confidence to start my own business and use everything I have learned to help those in my community.” Said Phakamani Zungu, one of the graduates in Plumbing.
Glencore collaborated with Circle Way Training, a training facility that provides communities in Mpumalanga with practical, transferable skills in each of the portable skills courses through an application process.
Glencore looks forward to providing more opportunities that help contribute to the progress of communities near its operations and encouraging their entrepreneurial spirit in the effort to help reduce the unemployment rate in South Africa.
