South Africa’s biggest food and music extravaganza, the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival presented by Nedbank, is back in Jozi on 8-9 October with a scrumptious, to die for feast of taste-tantalising food and restaurants that will take visitors on a journey through a whole new world of delicious global cuisines, exposing them to both the latest cooking fashions and all their favourite flavours.
Get ready to succumb to temptation at this year’s food extravaganza which takes place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, which has recently undergone a massive multimillion-rand upgrade. This year’s venue is a superb, central location with multiple entrances and exits and loads of parking, making it the perfect venue for an international food and music festival of this stature. With over 40,000 festival-goers expected over the two days it is set to be a festival weekend of a lifetime that cannot be missed!
Food Network (DStv Channel 175) celebrity chefs Siba Mtongana, Jenny Morris and Reza Mahammad will meet and entertain festival visitors at the Food Network pavilion with photo opportunities, onstage games, food trivia and great prize giveaways. Test your tastebuds at a blindfold food and spice tasting challenge hosted by Reza and Jenny, with instant prizes. You can also chance your arm at Dressing Siba’s Table, with Siba herself picking winners and offering prizes!
Top local celebrity chefs Reuben Riffel, Callie-Anne, Sarah Graham and J’Something will be bringing their celebrity-hosted restaurants right to your doorstep at the festival.
Reuben’s Restaurant boasts a fine yet unpretentious cuisine that evokes memories of Reuben’s more humble days growing up in Groendal before he hit the limelight cooking with culinary queens such as Martha Stewart. Reuben’s four restaurants today wow the world.
Callie-Anne is a food-enthusiast who outgrew her participation in the highly popular MasterChef South Africa TV competition to become a food traveller and author. Her passion for back-to-basics, living-in-the-wild, sustainable cooking was conceived while managing a luxury safari camp in Mozambique. Needing little more than a wood-fired stove and conventional cooking tools, she has developed her own unique, organic rustic style which may be cooked in the wild but could equally be served in a 5-star restaurant. Callie-Anne Cooks into the Wild airs on ITV Choice (DStv Channel 123) on Thursdays at 8.05pm.
“Cooking is an emotional thing for me. I love everything about it! The look on people’s faces when they eat my food, the feeling I have when I take that first bite of a mushroom risotto I just made and the buzz I get in the kitchen when things are getting heated up… it is all just one big confirmation that it is what I need to be doing in my life!” says Callie-Anne. Her exotic menu will start with a trio of salmon, and the main course a variety of traditional South African dishes (slow-braised Karoo lamb with a rich Pinotage sauce; or of you prefere, chargrilled chicken breast).
Celebrated South African cook, Sarah Graham is a TV host, author and inspirer whose signature food is simple and healthy. Her food can be shared unpretentiously with family and friends and all recipes from her current cookbooks are super tasty and accessible She started her food blog, A Foodie Lives Here, in May 2010 and later that year was the first South African food blogger to be awarded a cookbook contract by Penguin Random House. Her two successful cooking shows have aired both in South Africa and internationally, in over 40 countries including the United States, and won a SAFTA (South African Food & TV Award). She has three cook books, called Bitten, Smitten and Home (Nominated at the Gourmand Cookbook Awards) and has recently just completed production on her fourth publication due for release early 2017. Her menu boasts an international theme with Vietnamese Summer Rolls, Hong Kong Hoisin Duck and a Chia Lolly for dessert!
J’Something, better known as the Mi Casa frontman is also a dab hand around the kitchen, having hosted two of his cooking shows and collocated with some of South Africa’s top chefs. J’Something has become famous for not only cooking homely, heart meals but also featuring his very own menu items in local restaurants The distinctly African and Portuguese inspired pop up called Something’s Cooking, boasts dishes such as Mom’s Winning Corn on the Cob, Portuguese Chicken, Grilled Prawns, as well as J’s Chalalaka, which will all be served to share with friends and family.
“This year will be the first year Travel Channel features at the festival with exciting opportunities for visitors to celebrate a brand new series of House Hunters International Africa, which premiers on Travel Channel (DStv Channel 179) during the first week of October. Travel the world in the Travel Channel photo booth, with the opportunity to play around with backdrops and props depicting exciting destinations.”
In addition, the Delicious Gourmet Food Market is set to excite your taste buds with the best artisanal, gourmet market and traditional food Jozi has to offer. Festival goers will be spoiled for choice with the biggest cornucopia of options yet, from a fiery Durban curry and tandoor roti to Italian pizza and pasta. Try out our kebabs and schwarmas, Spanish paella, Thai spring rolls, Japanese sushi and fusion Dim Sum. We return closer to home with traditional African menus, such as plates of Nigerian and Congolese flavourful cuisines. American BBQ briskets and smoked southern chicken get served up alongside hotdogs, dagwoods and venison burgers.
