In a strategic move to bolster infrastructure investment in the province, Lebogang Maile, the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance and Economic Development in Gauteng, on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with representatives of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) — one of the world’s largest construction and engineering firms.

The meeting forms part of Gauteng’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a preferred destination for global infrastructure investment and to fast-track key development projects that support inclusive economic growth. MEC Maile described the engagement as an important milestone in deepening bilateral cooperation between the province and international partners.

“We are keen to harness global engineering capacity, like that of CSCEC, to help deliver large-scale infrastructure that transforms lives, creates jobs and positions Gauteng as a global development hub,” Maile said in a post following the meeting.

During the engagement, the parties explored opportunities in sectors such as transport infrastructure, affordable housing, and industrial park development — all aligned with the Gauteng government’s strategic priorities. CSCEC’s attendance underscores the firm’s interest in leveraging its global expertise in a key African growth market.

The meeting also signals Gauteng’s commitment to forging strong international partnerships that go beyond mere investment pledges. Maile emphasized that the province expects tangible outcomes: robust job creation, skills transfer, and inclusion of historically disadvantaged South African businesses in project value chains.

“It is not just about building infrastructure — it is about building capabilities,” Maile remarked.

Observers note that this engagement follows a broader pattern of increased provincial engagement with China’s business and diplomatic community. Earlier this year, Maile also met with the Consulate General of China in Johannesburg to discuss cooperation frameworks.

Moving forward, the Gauteng Provincial Government intends to establish a dedicated joint-working group with CSCEC and other partners to advance project preparation, ensure regulatory alignment, and monitor implementation progress. This structure is expected to expedite project readiness and attract further investor confidence.
