Fuel efficiency, luxury and overall good looks drive GWM P500 HEV’s appeal

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The 2025 GWM P500 HEV arrives in South Africa as one of the most technologically ambitious bakkies in the local mid-size segment. Launched alongside its diesel sibling in August 2024, the hybrid version offers a compelling alternative to conventional powertrains — and is a signal that Great Wall Motor is serious about electrification in this market.
Powertrain & Performance
Under the bonnet of the P500 HEV is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, forming a hybrid system. In tests, the power delivery is generally smooth and quiet, particularly in suburban driving where the electric assist helps with low-speed torque.
However, the HEV setup shows its limits on steep inclines and under heavy load. During the launch review, the hybrid unit “felt somewhat breathless when ascending inclines” — meaning that in mountainous or high-gradient environments you might notice slower responses compared to a pure petrol or turbo-diesel.
The hybrid system is better suited to mixed driving and moderate duty than full off-road strain. Transmission is via a 9-speed automatic (often referred to in local reviews as “9HAT” in hybrid mode). The shifting is refined, and engine noise is well suppressed in normal driving. Ride, Handling & Practicality
In terms of ride comfort, the P500 impresses. Its suspension soaks up typical South African road imperfections well, and the cabin remains composed at highway speeds. In comfort mode it’s a relaxed cruiser.
The exterior dimensions are substantial: at nearly 5.4m in length, parking in tight inner-city garages or side streets can be a hassle. Cabin quality is one of its strengths. Well-appointed materials, generous features, and a premium feel set it apart from many rivals. Reviewers noted the high equipment levels, good ergonomics, and strong
perceived value.
The P500 HEV also offers decent off-road credentials (in 4×4 variants), though with less torque reserve than the diesel under extreme use. In everyday use its torque delivery is sufficient, but heavy towing or steep mountain tracks might expose its limitations.
Fuel Efficiency & Running Costs
This is where the hybrid version shines. In mixed driving, fuel consumption is substantially lower than a non-hybrid counterpart. Reviewers noted strong fuel savings when traffic conditions are favorable and the hybrid system can contribute meaningfully.
Battery and hybrid systems do add complexity, and long-term reliability remains to be proven in South Africa’s climate and rugged conditions. Warranty and servicing support from GWM will be critical to buyer confidence.
Verdict
The 2025 GWM P500 HEV is a bold step for the South African bakkie market — a fusion of utility and hybrid efficiency. For buyers who spend a fair amount of time in urban or suburban areas, and whose usage profile is moderate, the HEV offers a compelling mix of refinement, lower fuel consumption and modern tech. Apart from a somewhat below-par performance under load, when climbing gradients or carrying heavy loads, the HEV remains a bakkie in a million.
