“Empowering as far as the eyes can see” is what Ekasi Educational Initiative (EEI) stands for. Since its inception in 2010, Ekasi Educational Initiative (EEI) has helped matriculate little over 2000 students within Soweto and surrounding areas.Ekasi Educational Initiative is currently based in White City Jabavu, Soweto and is the brainchild of Doc Mavhunga and Clan Masipa, whom saw an opportunity to close the gap between schools in Soweto and surrounding areas.
EEI provides extra classes for high school pupils in grade 10 to 12, classes are routinely held on Saturdays and school holidays to help the kids prepare for exams. The EEI is an NPO that solely operates on donations made by parents of attending students, these donations help EEI with admin, stationery and food for the kids, but they do require further assistance from anyone willing to help.
An engineer by profession, Mavhunga explains “EEI was a dream that I knew would not only empower our youth but also improve our communities, the youth are the key holders of the future, if they are not well equipped and supported I am afraid the future will look bleak”.
Masipa further adds “EEI staff members all have a common goal and that is to empower our students, we achieve this by hiring for attitude rather than experience. Although our staff members are teachers by profession in their respectful subjects, we also cater for members whom have the knack for teaching and this alone has helped us achieve our primary goal”.
EEI just recently held their first meeting with parents of last year’smatriculates, where top students were recognized for their hardwork. Some whom received awards included one of Gauteng’s top achiever Buhle Hlatshwayo whom received 5 distinctions, and twins Andile &Wandile Ndaba who also received distinctions in their respectful subjects. Other distinction students included ZwelethuMachepa, PholosoMaxam, Judy Chauke and Thato Lee who were the biggest surprises, having been ranked amongst underperformers are now EEI’s top performers.
Ekasi Education Initiative caters for subjects such as; Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Maths Literacy & Pure Maths. Ekasi Educational Initiative student database has continued to grow year-in and year-out, this year was no different, they have so far received over 300 student registration and are still accepting. It’s never too late to invest in your child’s education.
