The Joseph Shabalala Foundation, together with Mrs. Thokozile Shabalala, wife of the late Dr. Joseph Shabalala, wishes to express deep concern regarding the African Icons Tribute Concert organized by Lebo M Productions in honour of Dr. Joseph Shabalala.
While we appreciate the sentiment behind this event and recognize the efforts to honour Dr Shabalala’s extraordinary legacy, it is important to underline that the proper protocols and communication channels were not followed. Neither the Foundation nor Mrs. Thokozile Shabalala were consulted or informed prior to the announcement or planning of this tribute.
As the official custodian of Dr. Shabalala’s name, image, and legacy, the Foundation was not given the opportunity to review or approve this event. The absence of formal engagement with the Foundation and Dr. Shabalala’s family represents a disregard for the processes that protect his intellectual property and legacy. This has caused significant concern as it misrepresents to the public that the Foundation or family has sanctioned the event, which is not the case.
The Joseph Shabalala Foundation and family remain committed to preserving and honouring the memory of Dr. Joseph Shabalala with the dignity and respect it deserves, ensuring that all legitimate tributes follow due process and mutual respect.
