Gauteng based side Clapham Secondary School were crowned the 2015 COPA Coca-Cola® National Champions following an entertaining final against Sol Plaatjie Secondary School from North West at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, Durban.
Clapham won by 1-0, a goal scored by Likhanyile Ndlendle, giving his school, a second successive COPA Coca-Cola® national title. The victory was well deserved for Clapham as they entertained the crowed throughout the tournament with some brilliant football.
Earlier in the day the 2015 Which Part Will You Play Invitational side provided some joy for local fans when they played a curtain raiser against a local Under 15 side.
The day however belonged to Clapham, who won the hearts of the fans by displaying skilful touches. The team from Pretoria had a comfortable journey to the finals, easily brushing aside host team St Francis 3-0 and trashing Moroka High School 5-0. Finally, they secured their spot in the final by seeing off Luckhoff Secondary School 4-2 in their semi-final.
Luckhoff Secondary School from the Western Cape finished third, followed by St Marks International School (Mpumalanga) in fourth place, St Francis College (KZN) in fifth place, Klass Mothapo Secondary School (Limpopo) in sixth, Steynville High School (Northern Cape) in seventh, Molly Blackburn Secondary School (Eastern Cape) in eighth and lastly Moroka Secondary School representing Free State.
The top three schools walked away with R60, 000, R30, 000 and R25, 000 respectively to be used to help develop their sporting facilities in their respective regions.
Individual awards went to the following players: –
– Goalkeeper of the tournament: Kamogelo Matane (Sol Plaatjie Secondary School)
– Player of the tournament: Kagiso Khula (Sol Plaatjie Secondary School)
– Top goal scorer: Likhanyile Ndlendle (Clapham High School)
– Coach of the tournament: Issac Shai (Clapham High School)
COPA Coca-Cola® is a global initiative that gives millions of young football fans the opportunity to come together and celebrate their passion for football, as well as a chance to realize their greatest potential.
The COPA Coca-Cola Football tournament is in its ninth year and once again the competition was a huge success, with some excellent football played by some of the top junior players in the country.
