About fifty talented graduates from 21 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges across South Africa are gearing up for an exciting opportunity: a fully funded, one-year training programme in cross-border e-commerce in China.
The group is scheduled to depart from OR Tambo International Airport on Monday, 12 January 2026, marking the latest cohort in an ongoing initiative to boost digital commerce skills among South African youth.
The programme, sponsored by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), aims to equip participants with cutting-edge expertise in online trade, international retail standards, and global market trends. By fostering a strong entrepreneurial mindset within the retail sector, the initiative seeks to empower young South Africans to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
This flagship collaboration between the W&RSETA and the Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre (CCIEEC) has been running successfully since 2023.
The first batch of 82 TVET graduates completed the 12-month programme and returned to South Africa in May 2025, bringing back valuable international exposure and practical skills.
As part of the W&RSETA’s broader international development efforts, the programme annually selects promising TVET students, arranges their training at leading foreign institutions, and provides hands-on experience with global retail companies. The goal is to enhance their business management capabilities and make them more competitive in the international marketplace.
This initiative highlights the growing partnership between South Africa and China in skills development and underscores the importance of digital innovation in transforming the wholesale and retail sectors. Upon their return in 2027, these graduates are expected to contribute significantly to South Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape and e-commerce growth.
