Season 14’s youngest contestant stepped into the Cape Town Audition room with the single-minded purpose of leaving with a Golden Ticket and now is in the Top 4. Thato must surely hold the record for the longest traveller to an Idols SA audition as he had to travel for a staggering 1 250km from his hometown of Postmasburg (in the Northern Cape) to Cape Town. The young barber’s tenacity was not in vain as he received his Golden Ticket after scoring three yeses from the Judges. He is now determined to go all the way for his mother, who is a cancer survivor.
On the last performance that got him in the Top 4, Thato’s rendition of Nigerian Pop star, Davido ‘s monster hit –“ If” got the judges giving him unanimous thumbs up, with Unathi calling him “magnificent” and Randall praising his “versatility and consistency”. When Somizi voiced his faux-disappointment at not seeing some skin action, Thato awarded his fans a peek of his abs. This was proven again at the Eastgate Mall when the fans kept screaming his name throughout the photo opportunity session. It is easy to see that he loves cartoons. At 23, he is the oldest of the Top 4.
Then comes King B, with a voice as big as his personality! King B’s voshohas surely becomes his trademark. The HR Management student from Kagisoin the west rand of Johannesburg says he is inspired by the glamour on Miss Universe and makes it clear that the industry isn’t ready for him. Thanks to her powerhouse vocals, Thando also epitomises the saying, “dynamite comes in small packages”. Despite being extremely shy initially, Thando has gradually peeled away the layers giving strong performances right through until now.
