The search for best Shisanyama reaches final stage

The Search for South Africa’s Best Shisanyama has reached the final stage.
Chef Benny and DJ Mo Flava, together with Windhoek have announced the final
four Shisanyamas that will go tong-to-tong at Nasrec Showgrounds on 9th
December where the ultimate 2019 winner will be announced.
“We visited the eight finalists, as judged by the public and through our
expansive voting system the final four have emerged,” said Chef Benny. “It
is now out of our hands and Chaf Pozi, Meet Meat, Senzi’s Grill and Butchery
and Imbizo Shisanyama have to impress the public that come to Nasrec as they
will vote and decide who will be crowned the 2019 Best Shisanyama and take
home the prize worth R1000 000 rand.”
The finalists will be supplied with meat, fruit and vegetables from
Windhoek. “On the day each finalist has to select their meat from a range
we will supply including all types of steak, ribs and boereworse. However
most will be bringing their own secret sauces and marinades to cook with. In
this way we ensure that the playing grounds are level, and it is up to the
way the food is cooked that will determine the winner,” said Chef Benny.

Senzi Frey, whose Shisanyama is based in Margate in KZN, is overjoyed at
being selected in the final four. “I am honoured to be in the top four. I
already feel like a winner! Being voted by the public against such tough
opposition is the biggest prize. It is a vote of confidence and
confirmation of our quality offering. I feel a bit nervous that I will not
be cooking with my own meat, but I know that Windhoek will only supply the
best. I will be bringing my chef and braai master who have never been to
Gauteng before which has made the trip even more exciting for them. I would
love to win the first prize as this will help me expand Senzi’s Grill.”

Diepkloof’s Meat Meet co-owner, Khothatso Mokhele is overjoyed at getting
into the final four. “Now we have a national platform where people can
experience our amazing food, and vibe! We are ready,” said an excited
Khothatso. “The other competitors have their strengths and so do we. We
are experienced and confident about ours and we will be on top form at
Nasrec. We will bring our unique touch into the competition! We expect to
tantalise the taste buds of the crowd and leave behind delighted faces! Our
motto is Consistency, hard work, and ethics. We also believe in respect,
friendship, team work as we also engage with identified needy communities.”

Meat Meet began in 2001 when the Shisanyama concept was very new. Founder
Homi Nyakale owned a Butchery with only a small braai stand, but recognised
the popularity and demand for chargrilled meat. “It was tough at first,”
said Khothatso. “My mother, Homi, spent many long hours in the shop and my
brother, Khunou and I helped her after school and university. In 2004,
business partners, Papi and Nico, also upcoming entrepreneurs recognised the
opportunity to supply beverages, adding to the complementary mix. This
collaboration is what has made our Shisanyama most loved in our hometown,
Diepkloof.”

“Windhoek launched the Search for South Africa’s Best Shisanyama with the
aim of rewarding those who invest the same level of passion and
craftsmanship into their Shisanyama as Windhoek does into their beer. We
are now at the last phase and I wish the final four the best of luck for
Nasrec,” said Dana Katz, Windhoek Marketing Manager.
