Steers enables children to play through South Africa’s biggest physical education challenge

LET'S PLAY FINALS - Nelson Mandela Primary school pupils

The finals of the biggest schools’ initiative in the country came to a close on Friday the 27th October as schools across the country competed for the ultimate prize of a multi-purpose sports facility worth R1.3 million.

Steers along with Supersport set out to make a difference with the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge. Key stakeholders which included Active Education and Hitachi gathered at Nelson Mandela primary school in Sasolburg as both Grade 4 and 6 pupils competed in the challenge. After all scores were tallied up Gauteng’s Laerskool Jan Van Riebeek emerged victorious taking home the grand prize and the official title of the fittest school in the country. Steers brat packs where given to each of competing schools across province providing pupils with the necessary nutrients to fuel their physical activity.

The decline in the state of physical education has inspired Steers, a brand that is passionate about youth development, nutritional awareness and physical education, to continue their support of the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge – a challenge that promotes a more active and healthier lifestyle amongst primary school pupils. Steers continues to support youth development through its sponsorship of various sporting codes under Varsity Sports which include Varsity Cup, Varsity 7’s Rugby, Varsity Cricket, Varsity Volleyball. However, it saw the need to reach the youth while they are still at an early stage of development to drive within them a passion for playing and imbue a love of sport that will last a lifetime.

“We are very humbled to have been a part of this year’s initiative as we have a bold the vision of fully enabling school children to become more driven, active and successful in their lives. Over 435 schools were visited this year and we congratulate Laerskool Jan Van Riebeek on the spectacular victory and officially being crowned the fittest school in the country,” said Steers Marketing Executive Adolf Fourie.

The Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Nedbank Sports Trust, Active Education and Unicef.
