Battle of the Warriors a huge success
Boxing fans were treated to an awesome experience at The Battle of The Warriors 2, Vegas In Africa, held at the Sun Arena Times Square on the 21 October 2018. Fan feedback from this incredible event was that watching professional boxer, Luke “Sergeant” Sutherland, was nothing short of thrilling. The main event saw Sutherland fight against Ruan Visser, South Africa’s current heavy weight champion and former 13-1-0, one no contest and one loss against George Tshimanga.
Inspired by the likes of the legendary Willie Toweel and later coached by Ashley Fourie. Sutherland began his boxing career as a young high school student, with a focus on having fun. He cites boxing as a powerful inspirational, disciplinary and motivational force in his career. Sutherland, joined the Randburg Boxing Club, training first as an amateur boxer but then, like the majority of boxers in the industry, he had to shift focus and invest his time in building a career as an electrical engineer.
Returning to the sport some years later, Sutherland, succeeded in remaining undefeated within Johannesburg’s amateur boxing league. He joined Top Box Gym, a well-established boxing fitness and training venue and began taking part in White Collar boxing events, training with renowned coach Steven Castle. Castle, is a former professional heavyweight fighter who fought from 2008-2011, compiling an impressive record of 5-3-2; 2. Sutherland, is now a full-time professional boxer under his training guidance and mentorship.
The Battle of The Warriors 2, ‘Vegas In Africa’ fight event witnessed Sutherland challenging SA Champion Visser with the heart of a lion, dominating the proceedings for 4 rounds until he eventually surrendered to his power in the 6th round. Interviewed following the fight Sutherland said passionately “I am quite happy to have lost the fight to Visser. I know that must sound crazy, but he felt my power, I rocked him hard!” adding that “He’s a warrior, he came forward and he fought. We will fight for the title again, there’s no doubt in my mind about that.”
When asked for his opinion on the results of the challenge Castle said “We worked hard for this, it’s a fantastic result. Sutherland won the first 5 rounds on points, outboxing Visser on combination and skill, I am really proud of his performance.”
Sutherland expressed his deep gratitude to his family for all of their sacrifices in addition to Castle and his team, the “Sergeant Soldiers.”
